Security and Usage
Security
All security measures taken on the wired network to secure your machine apply to the wireless network as well. Be sure to have a current Antivirus Application and that your PC, Mac, or PDA is at the most current patch levels. For more information, go to the UITS Security Website to learn of the recommendations on how to secure your machine.
In addition to the recommendations from the security site, UITS recommends that users with a NetID and compliant card use the UCONN-SECURE network. The UCONN-SECURE wireless network has been built as an extension of the wired network and uses over the air encryption to secure data transmissions. UCONN-SECURE users have the same level of access to University resources as the wired network.
The UCONN-PUBLIC network is an unencrypted network. Users of UCONN-PUBLIC are encouraged to secure all wireless transitions over the air through use of the SSL VPN. The nature of 802.11 wireless networks is they allow users connect to the network by use of radio signals which are broadcast to all recipients in their local area. This makes it easy for any third party to intercept network traffic intended for, or generated by, someone other than themselves. Wireless users should be aware of this and make every effort to keep their communications secure over the UCONN-PUBLIC network.
Usage
Basic usage guidelines:
- Use the wireless service responsibly and ethically
- Do not download large files over the wireless network
- Do no stream audio / video (over 56 Kbps) over the wireless network
All users of the wireless network are expected to use the resource in an acceptable and ethical manner in accordance with all University policies. By logging in and using either wireless network, you are inherently agreeing to all IT policies ratified by the University of Connecticut and the State of Connecticut. Policies can be found at the IT Policy web page.
