Requirements

UITS recommends that all students, faculty, and staff utilize the UCONN-SECURE network wherever possible.  Access is granted to those who have compatible operating systems, client adapters and a NetID.

Operating Systems

To access the University wireless network with a laptop, your machine must be running at least one of the following operating systems:

Wireless Adapters

UITS does not recommend any specific brands of wireless adapters.  If you are purchasing a wireless adapter, or purchasing a device with one already built in, it is important to concentrate on finding and adapter that has the following criteria listed on the box or documented in its specifications:

Specification Comment
IEEE 802.11a Recommended
IEEE 802.11g Recommended
IEEE 802.11b Will work.  Minimum requirement for access.
IEEE 802.11i/WAP2 Recommended.  Allows connection to UCONN-SECURE.

If you are having trouble finding the specifications of any particular wireless adapter, look for the Wi-Fi Alliance certification mark that lists the adapter capabilities.

*For access to the UCONN-SECURE network, Windows XP users may have to install the Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access to allow for WPA2 configurations to run native in Windows.  This patch is rolled into Windows XP SP3.

**Windows 2000 users may not be able to configure WPA2 credentials natively within the OS, but through 3rd party client software.
