UCONN-SECURE Network
Windows XP
For access to the UCONN-SECURE network, Windows XP users may have to install the Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access to allow for WPA2 configurations to run native in Windows as mentioned in the Requirements section.
The following step by step instructions will detail how to configure your computer to run on the UCONN-SECURE wireless network through the Windows wireless configuration utility.
- Change your NetID password at http://netid.uconn.edu from a wired connection.
Note:- If you have changed your NetID later than March 4, 2008 then you do not have to perform this step.
- This will change your password for ALL applications that use NetID such as your Exchange/Huskymail account and HuskyCT
- There are two ways to access Network Connections
- Click on Start / Control Panel / Network Connections
- Open the Windows Start Menu / Connect to / Show All Connection
- In the LAN or High Speed Internet section, right click on the Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
- In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window that appears select the Wireless Networks tab.
- Ensure Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked.
- Click on the Add... button to open Wireless network properties window.
- Under the Association tab, type or select the following settings:
- Enter UCONN-SECURE (all caps) the Network Name (SSID) field at the top of the window.
- Under Network Authentication select WPA2 from the pull down menu. Note:
- Under Data Encryption select AES from the pull down menu.
- Click on the Authentication tab.
- Select or type the following settings:
- Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network: Checked
- EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
- Authenticate as computer when computer information is available: Unchecked
- Click on the Properties button located under the EAP type.
- In the Protected EAP Properties window, select or type the following settings:
- Validate server certificate: Checked
- Trusted Root Certification Authorities: UTN-USERFirst-Hardware
- Select Authentication Method: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
- Click the Configure button next to Select Authentication Method.
- In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties box uncheck the option to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
- Finally, click OK to save settings on the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties, Protected EAP Properties, Wireless Network Properties, and Wireless Network Connection Properties windows.
- Go to a UITS supported wireless location
- Click on the pop-up balloon your PC displays on the menu bar when in range of a UITS managed access point.
- Enter your NetID and NetID Password in the Enter Credentials window that appears. The Logon domain field should be empty.
- Click the OK button
- A Validate Server Certificate window will now appear. Click on View Server Certificate to ensure that it is signed by ender.uits.uconn.edu or bean.uits.uconn.edu and the date rages displayed are valid. The confirmaiton and acceptance of this certificate will ensure that you are connecting to a UITS managed access point and not a rogue access point.

If WPA2 is not available, check to ensure you have a Wi-Fi Alliance compatible client card installed as well as the KB893359 Windows XP WPA2 patch installed as mentioned in the Requirements section.

Congratulations, after a few moments you will connect the UCONN-SECURE wireless network.
