Overview
The University of Connecticut and University Information Technology Services (UITS) recognizes the need to offer students, faculty, and staff the network flexibility to access information that a wireless infrastructure would grant. Through funding from the 2004 Network Master Plan, the wireless pilot program that started in the winter of 1999 is culminating in a ubiquitous 802.11a/b/g wireless network.
Presently UITS supports two wireless networks in all installed locations:
The UConn Wireless Network is:UCONN-SECURE (Available beginning March 19, 2008)
The UCONN-SECURE wireless network is an 802.11i (WPA2-Enterprise / AES) authenticated and encrypted network intended to provide wired like access to students, faculty, and staff that have a UConn NetID and compliant client cards. This network performs as an extension of the wired network and has the same level of resources available.
UCONN-PUBLIC
The UCONN-PUBLIC wireless network is an open/unsecured network for all community members with a UConn NetID or GuestID. Access to University resources is limited on this network as it is intended for guest and/or casual use. Additional access may be granted through use of the SSL VPN if you have a non UCONN-SECURE compliant card. This network has limited connectivity options when compared to UCONN-SECURE or the wired network.
- A short-range network. You must be within a defined area where the radio signal is available, if you move out of this area, the signal will degrade and become too weak and you will be disconnected.
- A shared media that offers great flexibility, but not greater speeds than wired networks.
- Compatible with IEEE 802.11a/b/g devices in most locations. 802.11b/g in all locations.
- An IP only network.
